Is This a Puppy Mill Dog?

Today a 5-month old puppy was surrendered to our shelter. According to the paperwork that the owner was given when she purchased the dog, the dog is a "Peek-a-chon." (Please keep in mind that this dog has not yet been evaluated for adoptability, and it is premature to start seeking adopters.)

Also according to the paperwork, the dog's breeder was Marsha Cox of Mar-Don Kennel in Chillicothe, Missouri. You can read notes from an investigation of Mar-Don Kennel conducted by the Companion Animal Protection Society in 2007 here: http://www.caps-web.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=169&Itemid=207&report_id=126
You can read direct quotes from USDA Inspection Reports on conditions at Mar-Don Kennel at the following link. (You have to scroll down a bit to find the section on Marsha Cox.) http://www.petstorecruelty.org/USDA%20Violations%20by%20Petland%20breeders.htm

Or, you can read actual USDA inspection reports, here:

Also according to the papers, I have surmised that at some point early in life, this dog was sold by Marsha Cox to Lonewolf Kennels, of Iberia, MO. Lonewolf Kennels is a USDA Licensed Class B dealer. You can read a little something about an investigation of Lonewolf Kennels at this website: http://savepuppymilldogs.com/pow.html (scroll down a little). A video is attached, which shows some auction footage.

The paperwork also shows that the dog surrendered today had been purchased by the relinquisher at the Lucky Puppy store in Champagin.

So you tell me . . . does the Lucky Puppy store obtain dogs from Puppy Mills?

  1. It is a source of amazement (and sorrow) to me that this store is still in operation and it will soon be two years. I met a young woman last week-end with her "baby" Shih Tzu crossed with something else. I asked where she obtained the puppy and, yes, from LP. Since we were having a nice conversation I asked her how much the puppy cost. She said she paid $1,000.00 for it. One thousand dollars. She said she thought that was a lot of money but that the puppy was "worth it". No wonder they can stay in business.

  2. Wow, that is amazing but I have one better for you. My coworker bought a "teacup" Yorkie from L.P. he was said to get to be 2-3lbs, he was 5 months when she bought him he is now 9-10 months old and is 7-8lbs. Guess how much she paid for him??????.....If she had paid full price she would have paid $5,000.00 she was sooooo happy that she talked them down to $4,300.00. She thought she had gotten the deal of the century and he is not neutered despite me begging her to get him neutered she wants to breed him and get a puppy out of the deal!!!! I was so mad at her and I am at a loss as to what to tell her. I begged her to not buy a puppy from anywhere but esp. not from them and she did, I even showed her several rescues that she could have adopted purebred pups from for $200.00 but she wouldn't hear it. I tried to show her scientific proof that not having him neutered increases his risks of tumors and cancers. and that breeding just brings more unwanted pups into this world. Then she proceeded to tell me that she wants to stud him out, get one of the pups and then breed him to his own daughter!!! I have tried talking to her but I just don't know what to say at this point!! PLUS he is almost 10months old and has NEVER been to a groomer and she does not trim his hair the poor dog can't see anything and she is allways complaining about how he barks at every noise!! She also complains about the marking habits! These are the people who keep this place in business and it is sickening! They make spur of the moment decisions and don't do any research on the breed or "breeds" that they are buying and just increasing the number of dogs and pups in shelters by selling them unaltered the least they could do would be to have the pups spayed and neutered before they sell them to compleatly uneducated owners.

P.S. I wanted to thank you and all the shelter staff and board members for all that you do in finding the right owner for the right animal and not just giving the animals to anyone who walks through the door and doing your best to educate the new owners as much as possible!
    THANK YOU!

  3. I learned about puppy mills the hard way. When I was a child, we bought a Sheltie cross from a Petland. We took her in to be spayed and she died before they finished giving the sedation. They worked on her for over an hour and they were not able to revive her. Seeing that we were green to the whole puppy mill issue, we did some research. I was shocked at what we learned. We tried to get our money back and they refused. Turned out that she had a congenital defect from poor breeding. We then informed a local TV station and once the store got wind that a TV station may be investigating them, they gave us another dog. We were very reluctant to take another dog, but they would not give us our money back. We were very lucky with the Beagle we chose.(which was named after the vet that tried to save our dog). I think it is an injustice that people still give these stores their money. You can come to the shelter and get a great dog, some are pure bred, and spend a fraction of the money. STOP SUPPORTING PUPPY MILLS!! Do your research. Support your local humane society!!!!!

  7. I went to a puppy mill in iberia, missouri I'm not sure what it was called as I was not aware it was a puppy mill. This lady advertised free dogs she had about 6. She said she couldn't take care of them any more they were all puppies. I didn't think anything of it bc I was so happy! My friend and I get there with my son and daughter. It's DISGUSTING. now again she just gave me the address and told me I could come out and pick one of them. We get there and there are roosters chickens goats, those poor goats had feces up to the top of their legs. Cages and cages filled with animals. The smell was so horrible I couldn't stand it. So she takes us into this little building where I guess they keep the puppies because all of the adults were outside in cages. The smell in this building was so bad my friend had to leave and I made her take my kids.. she tells me how this is her sons puppy mill. He got into an accident that left him in a wheel chair and now she is trying to sell all of the puppies. She tells me the puppies she is giving away for free have something wrong with them. She had some poodle mixes and some other kind well there was an all black morkie that had his ear bitten off by a mama of a different litter of dogs. The cages were gross and packed full. The dogs were dirty and covered in feces. I picked the black morkie and she had told me her son was going to kill him because no one would want him. Well I had to wrap him in a blanket because he was sooooo gross!! We get on the road and he threw up so many times! We were all sick because how bad he smelled. I stopped b so we could all get some fresh air and I let him down on the grass.. this dog had NEVER touched grass before. It was foreign. He loved it! Well we took him to my friends house and had to wash him 5 times with shampoo to get the smell out, that didn't even really work because I had to go home and give him another bath. I'm sad to say George got hit by a car and not a day goes by that I don't miss him. I loved that dog as much as I love my kids. He was my baby. Didn't really want anyone but me. I miss him so much!!
